Interfaith Shelter 2023
Interfaith Shelter UpdateNew Information We are finishing our second week for the Interfaith Shelter that we are supporting at Pacific Beach United Methodist Church. Our church has helped on a daily basis with the set-up and day-to-day operation of the shelter including significant contributions to dinner preparation and overnight hosting. On Wednesday, we will be cooking dinner for both Project Grace and shelter guests. We thank you foryour support. It’s a little bit like a family. Two of our guests…
Women of LJUMC Ring in the New Year with Retreat led by June Dillinger
This past weekend twenty-two of us shared in a wonderful (though somewhat wet), retreat. Our presenter, June Dillinger, Margie Herrick’s daughter, came from Honolulu to challenge and inspire us, and she did just that! We enjoyed wonderful accommodations and delicious food, but, more importantly, we enjoyed camaraderie, companionship, and the comforting presence of members of our church family. Next year will see a new retreat with a new presenter, but with the old expectations of a worthwhile and inspiring weekend. …
Book Talk Update
Happy New Year to all you readers! Earlier this month, Cindy Rushing presented two well known nonfiction books by authors Cheryl Strayed and Bill Bryson who hiked, respectively, the Pacific Crest and Appalachian Trails. Both books were filled with adventure, sometimes harrowing and often very funny. We recommend them to you, whether or not you are a seasoned hiker. On Tuesday, February 1, at 2pm, in the Fireside Library, we welcome Jean Thomas who will present Geraldine Brooks’ newest novel,…
South District Called to Welcome Refugees
Christ United Methodist Ministry Center (CMC) is a Methodist-based 501(c)3 (non-profit) charity in San Diego working to provide physical and emotional assistance for the disadvantaged and underserved communities in San Diego County. Following Mathew 25 guidance to “welcome strangers”, CMC also has over ten years of experience in helping refugees who crossed into San Diego through the Southern border with Mexico, establishing another 501(c)3 (non-profit) called Safe Harbors Network (SHN). Through CMC and SHN, thousands of documented refugees through the…
UMCOR for Ukraine

How Your Pledge Supports Missions
As we are pledging to contribute to church funds, I thought that the congregation would like to know which organizations are supported by the church through the activities of the Missions & Social Concerns Committee. Our committee is a relatively small part of the church budget, but we provide funds for several important community groups as well as some missionary programs. Our social concerns are focused primarily on our local community where contributions can have a significant and immediate effect. …
Interfaith Shelter Network – 2021 Update
The Interfaith Shelter Network is continuing to serve the people experiencing homelessness even though churches are not hosting the shelters during the pandemic. The guests are being housed in motels, and meals are being delivered. It’s really not the same personal connection that we obtain when we host the guests in Memorial Hall and share wonderfully cooked meals with them. However, they have been provided with a safe and warm place to sleep during cold and rainy nights; and the social service support…
Migrant Children in San Diego
Almost 1500 children who arrived unaccompanied in the United States are now housed at the San Diego Convention Center. Initially there were more than 900 teenage girls, but now some younger boys and girls with ages of 5 to 12 are sheltered there with siblings being kept together. The goal of the convention center efforts is to find temporary homes for the children with family or sponsors, and then additional children will be brought to San Diego. The operation of…
Rummage Sale Update
Please forgive the long silence regarding the rummage sale. As most of you are aware, we were all set up to have our annual sale on March 14 and “pulled the plug” the Thursday before. With the help of dedicated crew, we tore everything down and put it in storage, thinking we might be able to have a sale in the fall. Obviously, that is NOT going to happen. At this point, we have no date in mind. Since the…
